Tarot
Minor Arcana Pentacles

Page of Pentacles

The Page of Pentacles is the student with a plan — young energy directed at something concrete. A new course of study, a first job, a business idea sketched on a napkin. The enthusiasm is real, and so is the homework.

  • ambition
  • diligence
  • new venture
  • scholarship
  • practicality

Upright

The Page of Pentacles upright is the beginning of something practical. Unlike the other Pages, who chase feelings, ideas, or adventure, this one wants to build something you can touch. A new skill, a first investment, a scholarship, an apprenticeship — the Page has done the research and is ready to start. The card carries the earnestness of someone who hasn't been burned yet, which is both its strength and its vulnerability. The ambition is grounded in reality, not fantasy. Take the first step. Open the account. Enrol in the course. The Page rewards action over deliberation.

Reversed

Reversed, the Page of Pentacles is all plan and no execution. The business idea stays on the napkin, the course never gets started, the savings goal remains theoretical. Procrastination dressed as research, or a young person's ambition undermined by lack of follow-through. The reversal can also indicate poor study habits, a venture launched without enough preparation, or someone who's so focused on the practical that they've lost sight of why the goal mattered in the first place. The coin is still in his hands — he just hasn't done anything with it yet.

In Love, Career & Money

Love

Upright

A relationship that starts with shared interests and practical compatibility rather than fireworks. Study partners, co-workers, someone you meet through a class or a project. Slow to ignite, but steady.

Reversed

Too much caution in love — overthinking compatibility, treating a relationship like a cost-benefit analysis. Sometimes the spreadsheet says no and the heart says yes. Let it.

Career

Upright

A new learning opportunity — an internship, a certification, a first job in a field you care about. The Page says yes to the entry-level position because it leads somewhere. Ambition with patience.

Reversed

Stalling at the starting line. Applications not sent, courses dropped, a career change talked about but never initiated. The gap between wanting and doing is where this reversal lives.

Money

Upright

The beginning of financial literacy — opening a first investment account, starting a budget, learning about compound interest. Small amounts managed well. The Page treats money as a skill to learn, not a problem to solve, which is exactly right.

Reversed

Poor financial habits forming early — spending without tracking, ignoring a budget, or saving plans that never get funded. The foundations of money management need attention before the numbers get bigger.

Symbolism

A young figure stands in a green field, holding a single pentacle aloft and gazing at it with concentration. The ground beneath him is fertile and freshly ploughed. Mountains rise in the distance. Unlike the other Pages, his posture is still — he's studying the coin, not chasing it. The ploughed field suggests readiness: the conditions for growth are prepared, and all that's needed is to plant. The mountains represent long-term goals that are visible but far off.

History & Origin

Court cards in the Pentacles suit were historically associated with students, young merchants, and apprentices. In older Italian decks, the Page (or Knave) of Coins was often depicted as a servant or young courtier holding a single coin. Smith's rendering emphasised study and contemplation over service, shifting the card's meaning toward education and ambition. The Golden Dawn assigned the Page to the earthy part of Earth, doubling down on the practical, grounded quality of this figure.
